KAI undertakes a range of activities related to the sustainability of koalas all over their natural range. The primary focus of this website is the South East Queensland region of Australia.

Replanting and Rehabilitation Activities

KAI applies for local, state and federal government grants, private businesses and enterprises as well as utilising our own donated funds to:

Replant koala food trees and other natives in parks, reserves and open spaces;

Rehabilitate existing bushland by removing exotic weeds, plants and grasses to facilitate natural regeneration as well as replanting to increase its carrying capacity.

Raising Koala Orphans

Raising koala orphans is a challenging task as it requires a huge commitment of both time, energy and resources. Koala joeys come into care when their mothers have either been killed, euthanased, injured or are too sick to care for their off spring themselves.

To raise koala joeys, a special license is required which can be obtained via a koala rehabilitation group such as Wild Care or from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection.

Environmental and Medical Research

Research is essential when developing koala management plans or implementing strategies to reduce the perils facing koalas.

A broad array of subjects need to be addressed including the environment (koala habitat), the care and rehabilitation of koalas as well as developing medical and veterinarian treatment regimes.

KAI has undertaken research and published papers in these fields over many years.

Awards and Sponsorship

Over the years KAI and some of its members have been recognised by local and state government authorities as well as private enterprises for the efforts they have made to ensure the survival of koalas in South East Queensland.

We have provided financial assistance and supported the establishment of other like minded groups such as Moreton Bay Eco Alliance (MBEA), Queensland Koala Crusaders (QKC) and are founding members of the National Koala Alliance (NKA), made up of koala stake holders in Queensland, NSW, Victoria and SA.
